Taco Bell just announced that it’s testing a new proprietary plant-based protein, which is being featured in the brand’s new Crispy Melt Taco, at select test locations in Birmingham, AL for a limited time.

The Crispy Melt Taco features a freshly fried daily white corn tortilla shell filled with layers on layers of warm nacho cheese sauce and a melty three cheese blend of cheddar, mozzarella, and Monterey pepper jack, crispy lettuce, diced tomatoes, reduced-fat sour cream, even more cheddar cheese, and your choice of boldly seasoned plant-based protein or real seasoned beef. It carries a suggested price of $2.49.

Inspired by classic Taco Bell flavors, the new plant-based protein is made with a soy and pea proprietary blend.

Additionally, during the limited time test, the boldly seasoned plant-based protein is also being featured in Nachos BellGrande, and it can be added to any item on the menu through order customization at no additional cost.

To top it all off, Taco Bell’s new proprietary plant-based protein is certified vegan by the American Vegetarian Association (AVA).

Other recent vegetarian tests by Taco Bell include the Cravetarian plant-based protein and the Naked Chalupa with a Crispy Plant-Based Shell, while the chain’s highly publicized Beyond Meat product partnership will be available before the end of this year.
